Sloping weighbridge technology solves sticky problem
for leading chemical company |
A special sloping 50 tonne Eurodeck pit weighbridge, has solved a ‘sticky’ problem for Hexion Specialty Chemicals at their Peterlee plant. When the company decided they needed to replace their aging pit weighbridge at their Peterlee site, they realised that finding a replacement was far from straightforward. The layout and terrain of the site mandate that the weighbridge has to operate on a gradient of 1 in 20! Having contacted a number of weighbridge manufacturers, Hexion found that Weightron Bilanciai were the only supplier who had the expertise and technology to take on the project. Weightron’s sloping bridge technology uses special load cell mounting assemblies in conjunction with the weighbridge design to ensure correct load introduction and a stable structure, even under vehicle braking conditions. Weighbridges can be installed to accommodate slopes either from end to end, side to side across the width of the bridge, or a combination of both.

Future Proof weighbridge brings important benefits to leading ‘end of life’ tyre recycler |
Weightron Bilanciai have recently supplied a fourth 50 tonne Eurodeck pit-mounted weighbridge to leading tyre processor Sapphire Energy Recovery. This latest weighbridge, measuring 18 metres by 3.2 metres, has been installed at the company’s new processing plant in Manchester. Sapphire Energy Recovery was formed in 2001 as a joint venture between Lafarge Cement UK and Michelin Tyre plc to recover and process ‘End of Life’ tyres for their use as cement kiln fuel. It is estimated that over 40 million used tyres need recycling each year and since 2003 tyres can no longer be sent to land fill. Their almost indestructible design, so vital when in use, makes them difficult to recycle, presenting a major problem for manufacturers and suppliers.

| More Heathrow T5 success |
Weightron Bilanciai have installed three more driver-operated, pit-mounted Eurodeck weighbridges at Heathrow’s T5 construction site. The installation comprises two standard 18 metre, 60 tonne capacity Eurodeck weighbridges and an extra wide 100 tonne capacity bridge, which can accommodate both standard lorries and the larger site construction vehicles.
This is the second phase of this important part of the project and follows on from the installation of the three original bridges in the entrance plaza in 2003. As this huge construction project progresses, the entrance to the site has been moved further north to make way for building works. The weighbridges play a pivotal role in controlling and monitoring the hundreds of lorries entering the site each day and, to avoid any site disruption, the bridges had to be installed and commissioned over a weekend.
This time restriction meant that the existing bridges could not be moved to the new location. The location of the new bridges, close to the multi-storey car park works, presented intriguing installation challenges for Weightron, each being on sloping sections of roadway with three different angles. However this problem is not new to Weightron who have developed an innovative solution for inclined weighbridges using special tapered wedges at each of the load cell mounting assemblies. |
